Faith Kaplan (nee Linder - Class of '79) is a Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate (JWC) graduate who received a BA in Sociology from University of Winnipeg and a BComm in Marketing from University of Manitoba. Her volunteer work in the community is expansive and includes commitments with Hadassah WIZO, the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, the Rady Jewish Community Centre and the Winnipeg Board of Jewish Education. Faith is a past president of the WBJE, and a recipient of Federation's Max Nathanson Young Leadership and Shem Tov awards for volunteerism. Faith is the former Executive Director of Congregation Shaarey Zedek in addition to working 18 years at Manitoba Telecom Services focusing on marketing and customer service. She is currently an independent marketing and branding consultant. Her passions include spending time with family and friends, enjoying excellent food and wine, travel and Israel. Faith is married to Hart Kaplan and they have 2 children. Adam is a Gray Academy graduate (Class of '08) and Yael will graduate with the Class of '10. On personal reflection, Faith says that, "Talmud Torah and Joseph Wolinsky were both nurturing and challenging schools that developed our sense of belonging to the Jewish community and instilled a commitment to our community. I am very pleased that Gray Academy continues that tradition and that I have played a part in its development as a centre of excellence."
Al Benarroch (Class of '82) is a Talmud Torah and Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate (JWC) graduate who received a BA (Hons.) in Psychology from the University of Winnipeg, and a Masters in Clinical Psychology from Lakehead University. Al has been Clinical Director of Jewish Child and Family Service since 1999 where he continues to serve the Winnipeg Jewish community. "I have a strong commitment to Jewish values, tradition and education, through my active synagogue participation, continued Jewish learning and lay leadership as a High Holidays services leader. I hope to bring my professional and personal expertise to the Board of Jewish Education to assist Gray Academy in maintaining its pursuit of both General and Judaic academic excellence." Al is married to Brenlee Sucharov (Class of '83) and they have 2 children, Amber and Simone, both attending the school. On behalf of the Alumni Committee, Al wishes to thank the WBJE for its support of alumni efforts. Al feels that as graduates, we can all feel proud of the deep rooted foundations to Jewish life and values that the school has provided us. The committee's goal is to organize and coordinate efforts on behalf of our proud and successful alumni body in assisting the school's continued commitment to educating and graduating informed and educated Jewish men and women.
Avrom Charach (Class of '84) is presently the Director of Finance and Administration at Kay Four Properties and previous to this position he worked as a Campaign Associate at Combined Jewish Appeal. Avrom and his sisters are all graduates of Talmud Torah and Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate. "We all gained a commitment to Jewish life and community from this and our family life. My daughter is in her second year at Gray Academy and I am pleased and amazed to see how much she is learning, both academically and about Jewish life." Avrom believes we should give back to our community which has given so much to us. Through his role on the Alumni committee, Avrom wants "the community to see how a Jewish education leads to successful, well rounded leaders in all aspects of the community, both secular and Jewish." Avrom is a recent recipient of the Max Nathanson Young Leadership Award from the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg.
David Gurvey (Class of '84) is a Certified Management Accountant advising multi-family owners on value maximization and rental legislation. He has two children at Gray Academy. David joined the committee to ensure the school has continuity and a sound financial footing. His vision for the committee is to create an entity that can grow to where it is an influential partner in the direction of the school.
Sari Rosenberg (nee Slayen - Class of '93) is a Ramah and JWC graduate who received her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Winnipeg. Sari is married to Brian Rosenberg (Class of '87), and their son, Jordan, is entering his second year of Junior Kindergarten at the Gray Academy. Sari joined the committee to support Jewish education in Winnipeg, and to maintain connections with fellow alumni.
Bert Schaffer (Class of '65) is a Talmud Torah and JWC graduate who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of North Dakota. Following a brief career as high school teacher Bert opened and ran a printing company for a period of over 20 years. During that period he remained very active in the school serving on the School Committees, the Board of Jewish Education and the Winnipeg Jewish Community Council as well as on the boards of several other major Jewish organizations. He hopes to continue his support of Jewish Education in Winnipeg through the activities of a successful Alumni organization. Bert believes that a strong Alumni Association can help foster a long term feeling of attachment to the school and the community. Bert and his wife Elaine have three children, Sharon (Schaffer) Goldenberg (’92), Dr. Allan Schaffer (’95) and Andrea Schaffer (’98).
Jonathan (Jon) Waldman (Class of '97) is the Communications Coordinator for the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, and is also is a freelance writer for numerous publications. Jon is presently serving on the Y Sports Dinner planning committee for the third year, and taught Creative Writing at Gray Academy in 2005-2006. He has led prayer services at the Sharon Home and participates in other fundraising events such as the JDRF Walk for a Cure. Jon's wife, Elana, is a graduate from the class of 2000 and his sister, Miriam, graduated in 2001. Jon's vision for the committee is "to help create and update our database of alumni with up-to-date information, as well as work towards having another alumni Shabbat soon."
Jackie Winestock (nee Greenstone - Class of '75) attended Talmud Torah and JWC along with her brother Sid Greenstone who graduated in 1972. Jackie is a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at the Victoria Hospital, completed a B.Sc. in 1984 and is currently a research nurse for a clinical drug trial. Jackie’s volunteer contributions are many: she was the final President of the Talmud Torah - JWC PTA and the first President of the PAC for Shore Elementary. She has been a BJE director, National Council of Jewish Women Board member, active in the Sarah Bell Branch of NCJW, a director of Federation, Co-President of Camp Massad, and BBYO Adult Board. Her two sons, Josh (Class of ’07) and Benji (Grade 12), came to Gray Academy from Talmud Torah when the schools merged. Jackie has been involved with the JWC Alumni Committee for many years now and created the alumni database with Sharon Chisvin (Class of '77). "My vision is to keep planning events. We need to collect the stories and document because whenever we get together we relive the stories. There are also lots of grads we need to find. They will be a good source of information about the history of the school, and when you see where these grads are, it is an amazing place. There are so many accomplished people who have their roots in our school. Jackie is a recipient of the Harry Silverberg Young Leadership Award from the Jewish Federation.
