All graduating students are considered for a number of scholarships that are awarded directly by Gray Academy.


THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S MEDAL
- awarded to the student with the highest overall academic standing in all courses designated as Grade 11 and Grade 12.

Value: $1,000

 

THE HARVEY AND SIMA KAY SCHOLARSHIP - awarded to the Governor-General’s Medalist from The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba.

Value: $1,000

 

GRAY ACADEMY OF JEWISH EDUCATION GOLD MEDAL - awarded to the student best combining high academic achievement, participation in extra-curricular activities and overall contribution to the school.

Value: $750

The Miller Thompson Foundation National Scholarship

The purpose of The Miller Thompson Foundation National Scholarship is to encourage and promote the attainment of higher educational goals for individuals who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, have made a positive contribution to their school through involvement in extracurricular activities and have made significant contributions of time and energy to community service programs. It annually awards one-year scholarships of approximately $1,000 to 200 recipients within Canada who are currently in their graduating year and planning on attending a post-secondary institution in Canada. The number of scholarships and the dollar amount is determined annually by the Foundation's Board of Governors.

Deadline for applications is March 31.

 

Canadian Merit Scholarship

Value: $1,000 B 2,500 for one year at a local level but up to $4,800 a year for up to 4 years at the National level.

These awards are offered to well rounded students who combine distinguished talents with character, leadership potential and a commitment to the community.

 

Manitoba Music Educators Association
Two scholarships, one of $600 and the other of $400, are awarded to two eligible graduating high school students who plan to pursue a Bachelor of Music Degree or a Bachelor of Education Degree with A Music emphasis at an accredited college or the University of Manitoba.

Applicants must clearly outline their musical background and training, their participation in school musical activities, and their future career plans in music. Applicants must be students of teachers or institutions belonging to MMEA, three letters of reference and an audio performance tape are to be included, the tape of principal study (voice or instrumental) should not exceed 10 minutes, and applicants may include one or two other instrumental or vocal selections not exceeding 5 minutes each.

Value: 1,500 scholarships of $1000 offered in North America

Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 to 3.5 maximum (on a 4.0 scale) throughout high school, Demonstrate financial need. Work an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year (part-time year around), unless individual circumstances such as the need for the student to be at home, a physical disability, transportation, or participation in school activities prevent the student's employment community service and/or co-curricular activities.

House of Commons Page Program
Value: A salary of $8,329.00 over a 12 month period.

Each year about 40 students from across Canada are selected to come and work as pages in the House of Commons. An overall average of 80%. Speak both official languages. Be prepared to attend University of Ottawa, Carleton, St. Paul University, Université du Québec à Hull. Attend a training program in mid-August.

University of Manitoba - Leader of Tomorrow

The University of Manitoba offers these awards.

Academic achievement (minimum 90% in grade eleven to apply) Leadership potential, community and school involvement. Students must apply for this award; they are not nominated by the school.

University of Winnipeg - Special Entrance Scholarships
Value: $2,250 Average of 95.0% and above
$1,750 Average of 90.0% - 94.9%
$1,100 Average of 86.0% - 89.9%
$ 800 Average of 80.0% - 85.9%
Also $600 Presidents Award of merit for five students with the highest average.

Offered to first year students entering a full year 1 program at the University of Winnipeg. Based on Senior 4 marks. Automatic consideration with application to U of W.

Application to U of W must be received by March 1st.

 

University of Winnipeg - Advanced Early Scholarships
Value: At least $1750 based on average.

Offered by the University of Winnipeg to students who qualify for Advanced Early Application process. A Senior 3 average of at least 91% based on five approved 30S credits. Must be registered for at least five approved 40S credits. Automatic consideration with early application.

Application received by December 1st.

 

University of Winnipeg - Alumni Entrance Scholarships
Value: Six to ten awards of $4500.00

Offered by the University of Winnipeg to first year students. Each school can nominate only one candidate. High academic achievement and promise. Noteworthy participation in school and community extra-curricular activities. Leadership qualities and strength of character. Contact your counselor if you wish to be considered.

Deadline is April 9.

 

University of Manitoba - Advanced Early Admission
Value: $1600

Entrance awards based on Grade Eleven marks. Academic achievement in Grade 11 must exceed 90%. Student must provide a school transcript of grade eleven marks with application.  Transcripts available in office.

Application to U of M must be prior to December 1.

Note: If you are taking Advanced Math/Calculus or Phys. Ed in Senior 4 – YOU MUST ensure that interim marks for your second term English are submitted in April OTHERWISE you only have four eligible courses being reported after term 1. See your counselor if you fall into this category.

Offered by the University of Manitoba to students entering the University of Manitoba. “All round” student. Average of at least 85% but not necessarily the highest student. Criteria set by school. Consistent participation and good academic potential.

School will nominate one recipient. No application form from student. Award can be held with other U of M entrance Awards.

 

Soroptomist
Value: $500

Presented by Soroptimist International of Winnipeg. These are youth citizenship awards given out in recognition of outstanding contributions made by young people to home school, community and the world.

For outstanding service to the school or community: considerable commitment to family life; involvement in student activities that benefit the school and its students; involved in community activities that benefit the immediate community and society at large; academic standing not an important factor. Contact your counselor.

One nomination per school. Application deadline December 15.

 

Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship for Colleges

Value: 25 awards available annually. For each National Award the colleges make a tuition grant of up to $4000 per year. In addition to this, the GWMSC offers $3000 to $4500 per year.

These awards are designed to identify, recognize and reward well-rounded students and adults who intend to undertake full-time study in a two or three year program leading to a diploma at one of our participating colleges.

Be accepted at an accredited community college for 2-3 year diploma studies in the academic year after selection. Have a minimum grade of 75% in courses required for their anticipated program of study. Demonstrate leadership potential.

Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Scholarship

Sponsored by Great-West Life and London Life Insurance Companies.

Minimum average of 85%. Financial need. Passion for pursuing an education and career in health sciences. Required to be submitted – transcript, three reference letters, completed student loan application, two page essay.

Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards

This award is presented by the Terry Fox Foundation in his honor.

Dedication to community service, humanitarianism, perseverance and courage in the face of obstacles, and the pursuit of excellence in fitness and academics. There is no school limit.

Premier's Volunteer Service Award
Value: No cash value. Award plaques presented by Premier during Winnipeg Volunteer Week Awards luncheon.

Awards that salute the outstanding volunteers in Manitoba communities. A special youth category recognizes young Manitobans who have made exceptional contributions to their schools, organizations or communities acting as role models for other young people.

Nominations due at the end of February.  If you are interested in being nominated, please see your guidance counsellor.

 

Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg
Value: Five scholarships at $1000 each

Demonstrate active involvement in preserving cultural heritage through volunteer work or employment in any cultural heritage. Between ages of 17 and 25. Accepted or currently enrolled in post secondary institution. Academic average greater than 75%.

C.A.P Student Leadership Award

Value: Twenty-one awards of $500.00 each.

This award is provided by the Canadian Association of School Principals and sponsored by Premier School Agendas Ltd.

Must be appointed by the school. Only one per school. Leadership characteristics in school and in wider community. Nominees must be in top 20% of their class. See your guidance counsellor if you think you meet this criteria.

Deadline for school submission is March 1.

 

Leonard Foundation Scholarships

Value: Up to 140 awards annually. Up to $1000

These awards are provided by a trust fund set up by the philanthropist Reuben Leonard.

All applicants will be considered but preference will be given to daughters or sons of ordained clergy, licensed elementary or secondary school teachers, Canadian military personnel, graduates of a Canadian Military College, members of the Engineering Institute of Canada and members of the Mining and Metallurgical Institute of Canada. Students must be enrolled in their first undergraduate program as a full-time student.

Chartered Accountants Scholarship

This award is provided by the Chartered Accountants of Manitoba.

Must be planning to attend a Manitoba university. 80%+ average. Interest in a career as a Chartered Accountant. Work experience, community and school involvement, communication skills. Recommendation of a faculty member. One nomination per school, see counsellor for criteria used in evaluating.

Manitoba Community Newspapers
Value: Five $300 awards for students who are interested in a journalism career.

Enrolling in an accredited journalism course. Desire to work for a community newspaper - urban or rural. Background of involvement in community activities.

Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program

Value: Ten awards of $5000, Nation Winner receives Panasonic notebook computer

Sponsored by Toyota Canada and Earth Day Canada for tomorrow’s environmental leaders.

Currently in his/her graduating year and entering a first year post secondary program in fall. Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Demonstrated outstanding environmental commitment , community service and leadership during their studies. High level of academic achievement.

Gudmundur Myrdal Bursary Fund
Value: One successful applicant will receive an award of $750 to be paid to the educational institution toward their tuition.

In tribute to Gudmundur Myrdal, the first Executive Director of Seven Oaks General Hospital, the Gudmundur Myrsal Bursary Fund has been established to assist full-time students who are entering or continuing with post-secondary studies in any of the health professions. Students must already be accepted into a program of health care studies to qualify for the bursary.

Deadline for application submission is April 20.

 

Coaching Manitoba Bursary

Value: Two bursaries of $500

Provided by Coaching Manitoba Inc. in an effort to develop and retain coaches in Manitoba.

Graduating this year and enrolling in post secondary institution. Minimum 60% course load in post secondary institution. Currently coaching with a plan to continue coaching. National Coaching Certification Program training is an asset. Compete application with letter of recommendation AND 200 word essay by May 16.

Canadian Hospitality Foundation

Value: Seven scholarships ranging from $1000 - $3500 each. One hundred other scholarships of lesser amount.

These awards are for students entering a hospitality/food/tourism degree at Guelph, Ryerson, Calgary or Mount St Vincent universities. Enrolling in programs at the above named universities. Good academic record, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities, financial need. Application forms available on website.

North Winnipeg Credit Union Scholarship
Value: Three scholarships of $1000.

This award is provided by the North Winnipeg Credit Union.

Student must be a member of the North Winnipeg Credit Union. Ukrainian origin. Academic achievement, participation in extracurricular community volunteer work and involvement in the Ukrainian community.

Manitoba Trucking Association
Value: Three scholarships of $1000.

This award is available to dependents of employees of Manitoba Trucking Association Members.

Dependent of Manitoba Trucking Association Member. Minimum 80% average in three 40S subjects. Community involvement and extra curricular involvement. Applications available from Man Trucking Assoc., 25 Bunting St (632-6600)

Application deadline mid July.

 

Manitoba Theatre Centre Scholarships
These awards are for full time students attending accredited theatre schools or programs. Call MTC for application.

Application deadline end of April.

 

Red River Exhibition Scholarships
Value: $1000 each award type.

These awards are created by the Red River Exhibition Foundation for individuals pursuing a career in the tourism sector, agricultural studies or automotive trades. Proof of acceptance into one of the named programs, and letter of reference from at least one person (teacher, employer, community leader). Essay (Topic available in brochure.)

Manitoba Forestry Association
Value: One award of $500.

The Alan B. Beven Forestry Scholarship is awarded to students entering a first year program in Forestry at a Canadian University or technical school.

Archie Nunn Scholarship
The Manitoba Soccer Association offers this award to players, coaches or referees who are graduating from high school and moving into post secondary programs.

Under 18 years of age as of January 1st. Registered player for at least three years and currently playing, refereeing or coaching. Character and leadership are assets.

Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association Scholarship

Value: one $1000 award for one male and one female winner.

Provided by the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association Inc this scholarship rewards one male and one female youth who have been good role models and who are going on to post secondary education. Good academic standing. Involvement in WYSA Inc as player, referee or coach. Leadership and community involvement.

Agricore Scholarships

Value: Twelve $1000 scholarships.

These AgPlus awards are offered to students interested in Agriculture or Agribusiness degrees. Applying to an agriculture post secondary program.

Blue Cross Scholarship/Bursary
Value: Each award is $500.

These awards are provided by Blue Cross to students who entering a Manitoba post-secondary institution There are also awards for students who are handicapped or who are moving into Physical Therapy or dentistry programs. High academic standing. Financial or physical need.

Application date is end of May. Application forms are available from the Awards office at the community college or university being selected.

 

Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship
This award is offered by the Phi Delta kappa Winnipeg Chapter to students interested in becoming a teacher.

Application due in mid May. Application from P.D.K. Foundations Chair/100 Queenston St. , Winnipeg, R3N 0W5.

 

RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarships

Value: 10 scholarships at $2007 each.

These awards are provided by the Royal Bank and designed to honour students demonstrating “hard work, innovation and solid career direction.”

Graduating this year and registering/accepted at an accredited college or university in Canada. Minimum average of 65%. Involvement in any or all of – community service, volunteering service, extracurricular activities, special endeavors, etc. Awards distributed according to region, population, gender and language.

Deadline is mid-May. Enclose a sample of an essay, project, multimedia project, etc. Application may be downloaded at the above web address.

These Pursue your Calling Scholarship Awards are for students entering programs in Manitoba universities or community colleges that would benefit MTS. The approved course list changes from year to year.

Consideration given to equity groups. See approved list of programs.

University 1 Student Council

Value: Five $1000 awards

Presented Annually by the University 1 Student Council.

Must have at least 80% or better on best five Senior 4 courses. High level of extra-curricular involvement. Contributions to high school community as well as community at large. Three letters of reference – one from principal, one from teacher and one from member of community.

Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarship
The Manitoba Foundation for Sports Scholarship Program provides an award of $500 to graduating high school students and $1,000 to students in the second or subsequent year of post-secondary education.

The program's emphasis is placed on athletes who have competed at the provincial level or higher and who have maintained a high level of academic standing, while showing a commitment to amateur sport through their involvement in coaching, officiating and volunteer activities.

The number of scholarships awarded annually varies, based on the number of applicants and the funds available for distribution. Preference is given to athletes attending university or college in Manitoba and enrolled in a related field.

CIBC Scholar Athlete
Value: $500 bursary

This award is a cooperative effort between the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

Participation in at least two interschool athletic programs. Minimum average of 85% over a full course load. Athletics, academics, interschool activities (student council, grad committee, yearbook, drama, etc), and citizenship (outside community) taken into consideration. 200 word essay on the importance of HS sport and how it has benefited you. Passport size photograph. Nomination letter from Principal.

Application deadline in mid May.

 

Manitoba High School "Athlete of the Year"
Value: No cash award. Publicity, a plaque and ring courtesy of Jostens

This award honors students that demonstrate athletic excellence. The Manitoba High School Athletic Association and Jostens of Canada cosponsor it.

Athletic background (at least two sports). School Sport Achievements (All-star, Captain, top Scorer, etc). Active in other areas of school life. Active in the wider community. Director of Athletics, in conjunction with coaches, will nominate one athlete to represent the school.

Nomination at end of May.

 

Employment Equity Awards
Value: one $2000 award and two $600 awards at each post secondary institution.

These awards are sponsored by the Manitoba Lotteries Commission.

Award is available to aboriginal peoples, members of visible minorities, persons with disabilities, or women in or aspiring to be in male dominated occupations (trades, technology, management).

Good academic standing and about to graduate. Entering your first year of post secondary studies. Award recipients will be considered for summer employment with Manitoba Lotteries Corporation following successful completion of first year studies. For more information call 957-2500.

The Edward Fein Foundation College Prep Scholarship
This scholarship is available to low income, high achieving Jewish students.  This scholarship is offered as part of a broader program of QuestBridge, a non-profit organization that has worked for 15 years to place top-tier college education within reach for outstanding low income students.  Last year, in its first year, the Edward Fein Foundation Scholarship Awards program helped 27 Jewish students from all across the country.

Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited Entrance Awards
Value: $5,000 per year (renewable for up to three additional years)

Number: Three
Field of Study: University 1 or any direct-entry program from high school

Qualifications: Open to students who:

  1. Are Canadian citizens or permanent residents;
  2. Have graduated from a Canadian high school or CEGEP no longer than 18 months prior to the start of the 2009/2010 academic session;
  3. Have demonstrated financial need based on a government student loan assessment from their home province and have completed a University of Manitoba bursary application;
  4. Register for full-time study in University 1 or in any Faculty or School at the University of Manitoba that admits students directly from high school;
  5. Have achieved a minimum average of 80% on their high school courses used for admission.
Applicants for this bursary will be required to submit a brief, typed letter outlining their extra-curricular involvement, on & off campus, along with their bursary application Form.
