Literacy with ICT across the curriculum

All grades use ICT (information, communication and technology) in ways that are meaningful to the curriculum.  For example, a unit on space may include research using the internet, note-taking using Word, and a final project using Inspiration, Powerpoint, Word, Photostory, etc.

Some specific skills students learn:
  1. Students become adept at keyboarding by using Type To Learn Junior in Grades JK-3, and Type to Learn in Grades 4-6
  2. Evaluating websites for validity (Grades 4-12)
  3. Choosing the best software application for projects, research, etc. (Grades 4-12)
  4. Hand-eye coordination practice for proper use of the mouse in Grades JK-2 using educational games (eg. Jigsaw)
  5. Becoming familiar with programs installed on our network: Kidspiration, Inspiration, MS Office, Photostory, WinMorph. (Grades 3-12)
Students receive instruction in the computer lab in JK-3 from the computer teacher. In Grades JK-3, students learn computer awareness, keyboarding and windows operations with some of the goals for the year focusing on assisting students as they navigate through the information made available to them, and to direct students as they gather, organize, analyze, and present their findings. In Grades 4-6, teachers collaborate with the ICT Department Head to integrate technology into their daily curriculum, within all subject areas.

Students in the high school are given opportunities to use technology in many different formats, depending on the subject area and assignments they receive.  In addition, in Grade 8 there is an elective in Computer Graphics, whereby students learn to use Fireworks to create and modify images.  There is also an elective in Grades 9 and 10 in Computer Multimedia.  In this elective, students use the iMac Lab to create and edit their own original videos.  Video editing consists of the application of transitions, special effects, (sound and visual), music tracks, voice-overs, etc.
