Every parent wants their child to feel safe, practice integrity, and feel confident in who they are. Our guidance program provides supports and resources to ensure every student has a positive school experience. This includes assisting with any matters happening both in and out of school that affect a student's feelings of personal worth, personal awareness, and personal safety. It's important to us that our students are comfortable in their learning environments.
In elementary, classes and counselling sessions provide students with a number of resources to help them deal with the physical and emotional changes they're experiencing, while giving them strategies for positively relating to others. This programming has a number of components.
Regularly during the cycle, our elementary students receive direct classroom instruction from our guidance counsellor. He works collaboratively with teachers and Child Guidance Professionals to implement Individual Education Plans and Behavior Intervention Plans (guidelines set out by Manitoba Education). He also shares resources and distributes timely information to students, parents and the educational community.
Classroom topics include:
- bullying prevention
- social skills
- online safety
- friendship skills
- puberty and reproduction
Our Guidance department provides counselling and mediation sessions on an as-needed basis. They can include individual, group and/or class discussions (as deemed appropriate), and rely heavily upon collaboration between school (teachers and cousellors) and home (parents or guardians) to ensure everyone is on the same page and that students are thriving.
- well-being (emotional, social, intellectual, physical)
- individual responsibility
- friendships & relationships
